Oberon, Inc. Provides Cost-Effective Upgrade for Securing Cisco 1140/1260/3500 series Access Points in Existing Installs
June 27, 2010 - Oberon, Inc., a leading designer and producer of in-building wireless voice and data network infrastructure products, recently announced a new line of products designed to help control the cost of wireless network upgrades to Cisco's new 3500 series access points. The new series of adapter doors for selected Oberon wireless access point enclosures allow for the removal and replacement of doors in previously installed enclosures. The new doors then permit the installation of the Cisco 1140/1260/3500 series access points without the need to replace, remove, or reinstall existing enclosure back boxes. The new access point is locked within the door, providing the same level of network physical security and aesthetics as with the original design.
"We felt it was important to step up and show our customers that we are committed to helping their bottom lines by providing a solution that allows them to purchase only what is necessary for the upgrade. This also saves considerable labor as all the existing infrastructure stays in place, and in most cases there is no need to work behind the back box at all," explained Oberon President Scott D. Thompson. "Keeping the current back boxes in place also reduces waste, making this unique approach the right one from an environmental standpoint.".
The use of existing infrastructure has additional benefits for the federal and medical markets, where additional regulations may apply when working above the ceiling plane. By providing methods of access that do not breach air handling space, compliance with federal and medical market requirements, such as those set by The Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), can be simplified.
The new adapter doors provide upgrade options for the following models:
38-1052-ADPDOOR-1140 allows replacement of the Cisco 1240 with the Cisco 1140/1260/3500e/3500i access point. The access point is locked into the door, requiring key access to the enclosure to access the device. The model 1052-00 enclosure remains in place, allowing for cable management and termination to remain in place. Antennas can be attached directly to the face of the 1260/3500e access point. Available for Oberon models 1052-00, 1027-00, and WC-AP1240-X
38-1052-ADPDOOR-3500e allows replacement of the Cisco 1240 with the Cisco 1260/3500e connectorized access point. The access point is mounted in the enclosure. The adaptor door is a little bit deeper to allow connection of door mounted antennas, such as Oberon's 34-ZDUAL dipole antenna, to the access point. The model 1052-00 enclosure remains in place, allowing for cable management and termination to remain in place. Available for Oberon models 1052-00, 1027-00, and WC-AP1240-X

Enclosures Provide an Additional Layer of Networking Security for Educational Facilities
June 27, 2010 - As Universities, high schools, and related conference and medical facilities seek to better secure networking systems, enclosures can provide an additional layer of protection from unauthorized access to equipment. Available for both wireless access points and telecommunications and A/V components, enclosures provide keyed access to networking equipment, preventing vandalism while providing convenient access to authorized technical personnel.
Oberon's wireless AP enclosures are designed to accommodate access points from most vendors. They are designed to enhance physical network security and simplify access control and maintenance for IT managers. Using an enclosure, network technicians can access the wireless equipment by opening the locked cabinet door rather than removing ceiling tiles and breaching the air handling space. This simplified access is particularly useful in medical environments or other areas where additional precautions are necessary when working above the ceiling plane, as well as in high-traffic areas where minimized maintenance interruptions is paramount. Additionally, the ceiling mounted location of the antenna is the ideal location for omni-directional antenna pattern coverage.
The Oberon Model 1070-00 ceiling-mounted telecommunications enclosure accommodates flexible combinations of rack mountable Ethernet switches, patch panels, wireless controllers and other networking and A/V components. Ideal for structured cabling and Fiber-to-the-Enclosure (FTTE) deployments, these enclosures offer flexibility in housing a variety of networking and A/V components. By locating equipment directly in the space where it is needed, the enclosures can be used to shorten home-runs, improve data rate and network capacity, and reduce crowding in the telecommunications room.
In addition to providing additional security and convenience, enclosures provide a sleek, high-tech aesthetic befitting institutions of higher learning, where maintaining a commitment to providing the best possible technology for students and faculty is key. Oberon wireless and telecommunications enclosures are available with color options, including customization options for special projects, and are designed to enhance any office or educational environment.

March 9, 2009 — Oberon has released version 1.3.0 of DOT11 Monitor™- the real-time Wi-Fi connectivity, monitoring, and assessment tool. This latest version of DOT11 Monitor can monitor controller based W-Fi networks using Cisco 2100 and 4400 series controllers. The new release also creates a top-level total network availability metric. This total availability metric provides a measurement of the number of client devices which are connected to the wireless network above a user defined threshold. This metric is for ALL client devices connected to the wireless network. Network administrators can use this metric to document changes to network performance, validate moves, adds, and changes, and support or enforce Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for the wireless LAN.
Use DOT11 Monitor to trouble-shoot and resolve wireless connectivity issues, validate wireless network designs, enforce wireless service level agreements (SLAs), and remotely monitor customers' networks. More information is available on Oberon's
DOT11 Monitor™ page.
